Europe

The European Union is the biggest trader and second biggest consumer of forest products in the world. It is of vital importance that timber traders and other stakeholders find a way to determine where and how to best target efforts to secure legal supply chains in line with FLEGT requirements. It is also critical to highlight positive changes taking place in the EU and producer countries, thereby reducing some of the stigma commonly associated with “rainforest timber”. At the core of the European side of the project is a suite of communications approaches and mechanisms with relevant departments and staff within the European Commission and individual EU member States.  These include Customs, monitoring organisations, other staff responsible for controlling timber imports, e.g.  Ministries of Environment or Agriculture, and the competent national authorities for FLEGT related issues.
